World IP Day April 26, 2025: Celebrating the Power of IP in Music

This year, in honour of World Intellectual Property Day on April 26th, we stepped up our efforts to examine how IP fosters musical creation.

What is IP in Music?

Intellectual Property (IP) encompasses the legal rights that safeguard creations of the intellect, such as songs, lyrics, rhythms, compositions, and even branding. In the realm of music, IP is crucial in several important forms. Licensing and royalties ensure that artists receive fair compensation when their music is streamed, aired on the radio, performed live, or used in films and advertisements.

IP Drives Creativity and Cooperation

Intellectual Property goes beyond mere ownership, it acts as a crucial link for creativity and teamwork. It enables artists to legitimately and justly reinterpret and expand on one another’s creations through licensing, remixes, sampling, and covers. In today's world of digital streaming and social media, a growing number of artists are establishing independent careers. It safeguards original creations from unauthorized usage, offers opportunities to earn money through streaming services, sync licensing, and merchandise, and assists in dealing with contracts and rights management. Supporting intellectual property in the music industry begins with simple, daily actions that honour and elevate artists. Listen to music on licensed platforms, purchase directly from musicians whenever feasible, and always acknowledge creators when you utilize their work.

Let’s continue to enjoy music in a way that’s fair, creative, and cooperative.
